Records Australia - Migration

Migration records include passenger lists, citizenship records and alien registration forms.

Passenger records document the movement of people into and out of Australia. The master of each passenger ship and aircraft was required to provide authorities with a list of passengers disembarking and embarking at each port. Before 1924, individual States largely maintained their own records.

The National Archives of Australia offers a search facility for migration, citizenship and travel records in its collection database. This includes an index to passenger arrivals by ship at Fremantle from 1926 and will be progressively extended up until 1964. Many ships bound for the eastern Australian states passed through Fremantle. The Fremantle passenger lists include all those passengers who disembarked in Fremantle. They often also include all other passengers who travelled further on the same ship and disembarked in other Australian or overseas ports.

NSW State Records maintains a number of free searchable online databases of immigration and shipping. Some databases show the place of origin of those migrating.

MADDENs who immigrated from Clare in Ireland have been extracted from the following database:
NSW Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896

The Public Record Office of Victoria also provides a number of free searchable passenger databases from 1839.

Most public records referring to Queensland prior to 1859 are held by the NSW State Records. After that date the Queensland State Archives maintained its own immigration records but many have not survived. The passenger lists that did survive are mostly for assisted passengers and only immigrants from Europe were recorded. It is therefore always worth checking for passenger records as they passed through other Australian ports on the way to Queensland. No Queensland passenger records are currently available online.

There are currently no digital images of records available on-line for State Records South Australia.

There are no online records available for State Records Western Australia. An index to Passenger Arrivals into Western Australia 1839-1890 and 1898-1925 compiled by the Western Australian Genealogical Society is available on CD. MADDENS have been extracted from the Western Australian Passenger records for 1839-1890 and the Passengers and Arrivals Swan River Colony 1826-1838 and Crew Lists 1829-1887. See MADDEN Arrivals Western Australia.

The Archives Office of Tasmania offers a free online search facility of passenger and ship arrivals and also departures.
